Hello Tim
I used …
o Tim
I used to do what you do – and it is fine.
I just find it easier to do the thumb drop, mainly because the hand/wrist keep the same relaxed shape no matter which string you are on.
I have changed my playing technique many times over the years and can only teach what I believe to be currently the best.
When applying a new technique, you have to try it for some time before making a truly informed comparison and decision.

i’ve gotta question …
i’ve gotta question about the thumb drop and my other 2 fingers on my right hand.
I rarely put my thumb on any of the strings to dampen/mute them, but instead, i put my two unused fingers on my right hand and put them on the string above the string i’m not playing (if i was playing the a string, my 2 unused right handed fingers would be resting on the E String); is that O.K., or should i try to adjust my style?

There is heaps of information (and much talk) in the beginning stages. That is because I believe it is of utmost importance to get the rudiments right – right from the start.

o Rebecca
Thanks for you comment. I checked out your debut video. The pick sound is very valid and can be just as useful as fingerstyle, slapping, palm muting etc.
Happy progress!

For bass amps,I recommend to get as much power as you can afford. There is a lot more to it than that, of course. Send me an email and I will send an article I wrote on exactly this topic.
Its great to see we are jointly working wonders!

It used to be very common for studio bass players to add a J pickup to a P bass.
Finally, a few years ago, Fender started a production model.
Yippee for me!

Hello Keith
Yes, …
o Keith
Yes, you can play bass through a guitar amp. However, you have to make sure you are not “over-driving” the amp.
With the bass volume down, turn the amp volume up as loud as you think you might need it. Gradually increase the bass output volume until it distorts – then back off the bass volume until it is under the distortion level.
You may have to decrease the “bass” tone knobs on the bass and/or amp.
Experiment cautiously, then you’ll be fine

Thanks, Anthony, …
Thanks, Anthony, for subscribing.
It is usually a good idea, even for more experienced players, to review basics – because that’s what all else is built on.
See how you go with the first 15 lessons (less than 2 months) and then re-assess. I will be happy to switch you over to the next series of Bass Lessons Online if you wish.

Hello, I just …
o, I just bought your online beginners bass course but I am not sure if I should be doing the beginners course or the intermediate. I wanting to wait to see more of your course to see if should to upgrade. There are alot of bass basics I am sure I can learn from the course. I guess my question is do you think as a person that has been playing awhile can I benefit from the beginners course. Oh I have never had a teacher, just books.

Thanks for the endorsement.
A low to mid-priced bass will not hinder your learning unless the bass setup is particularly inadequate.
