I am thinking about starting bass guitar lessons.?

Thursday, January 15th, 2009

Hi,
I need some advice. I am thinking about beginning to take bass guitar lessons. So first I want to know a little about the bass guitar if you could give me some information about it. I also would like to know your opinion on the bass guitar. I also want to know if the bass guitar is a good instrument to write songs with, including vocals. Also, a good brand of bass guitar. Finally, I would like to know what the difference is with a four string and a five string bass guitar. Thank you very much, please answer if you have had experience with the bass guitar and other instruments though. Thank you.

Without knowing what type of bass you are buying it is impossible to make assumptions of the instrument.

Any instrument that doesn't involve breath is a good instrument to learn for accompaniment with vocals. The bass is a little trickier then guitar or piano for vocal accompaniment however not impossible. Many fine vocalists also play the bass in a band.

Go to a local music store (avoid guitar center) Tell them you want to learn how to play the bass, They usually have teachers Figure out your price range. Some inexpensive models are very solid and will last many years with proper care but have no resell value. This you may find important when making a purchase decision. It's rare when one bass spans the entire carrier of a performer.
You will need an amp and a tuner and should have a metronome or simple beat box.
When you enter a music store be upfront with them. One should never buy their first bass online. Rarely is it setup properly out of the box. Improper setup can lead to a bass that can't be tuned or played correctly. Local music stores take the time to set up instruments properly. Many local music stores also offer a free lesson with your first purchase. Take it if they offer it. You can't learn everything in one lesson however taking lessons is the fastest way to learn and the lessons taught last a lifetime.
